Bhutan’s polls: Is it Real Democracy?
Bhutan has just gone through its first ever Parliamentary elections. Bhutan's king decided its time to handover the ruling power to people. It's good gesture, but is it really good? Bhutan's cleanage of Nepali Speaking Community, imposition of one language and culture policy shows how democratic is it. Making it's own people refugee and conducting elections is mockery of democracy.
No matter what, Bhutan's transition to democracy must be watched with scrutinized eyes as it hasn't accepted it's wrong doing. Instead of pressuring Bhutan, International Community is supporting its ethnic cleanage by taking refugees to third country.
Bhutan's democracy is its kings's puppet.
What to write about a country that measures gross national happiness in place of GDP and even boasts about pioneering such a concept. Well the refugee problem has many parties to blame and India tops the list but leaving that aside the people in Bhutan will follow anything their king tell. What a pity...
